Convert SCORM courses to xAPI and cmi5

To convert a SCORM course to xAPI, import the SCORM package into xAPI Course Builder, review what was found, edit the course, then export it as an xAPI or cmi5 package. The course is rebuilt as editable content rather than wrapped, so the new package generates its own xAPI statements.

How SCORM to xAPI conversion works

  1. Upload

Choose the SCORM package (.zip) exactly as it was exported, or a slide-based project file (.story, .cpt or .cptx).

  2. Review

Check what was found, such as pages, media and questions, before anything is imported.

  3. Edit

Update and improve the imported course in the studio, like any other course.

  4. Export

Publish a version and export it as an xAPI or cmi5 package.

What comes across

Legacy content becomes a course you can edit like any other.

  • Text and images
  • Choice questions, ready to use in knowledge checks and assessments
  • From slide-based project files: the slides you pick, with quizzes turned into scored assessments if you choose
  • Interactions that can't be converted are flagged, so you can rebuild them with the studio's own blocks
  • A permanent record of where imported content came from

SCORM 2004 sequencing rules aren't carried across. Check the course's navigation after import, then set its completion rules in the course settings.

Your options for SCORM content

OptionWhat you getWhen it fits
Keep it as SCORMCompletion, pass or fail, score and time, stored in your LMSThe course rarely changes and completion records are all you need
Convert it to xAPI or cmi5An editable course whose package sends detailed xAPI statements to your Learning Record StoreYou want to update the course and see what learners did
Convert, then launch through a SCORM-to-xAPI bridgexAPI tracking while your LMS still only launches SCORMYou're moving to xAPI before your LMS supports it

Not sure which you need? Compare xAPI and SCORM, or read what cmi5 adds.

Bring your question banks too

Questions from your LMS or item bank can come across as well: import QTI files into the question bank and reuse them in any course.

Before you import

Only import content you own or have the owner's permission to copy, modify and republish. You confirm this before every import, and you are responsible for how imported content is used.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert SCORM to xAPI without rebuilding the course?

Yes. Import the SCORM package and its text, images and choice questions become an editable course. Interactions that can't be converted are flagged for you to rebuild with the studio's own blocks. Then export the course as xAPI or cmi5.

Which SCORM versions can be imported?

SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 packages (.zip) can be imported. SCORM 2004 sequencing rules aren't carried across, so check the course's navigation after import.

Can I import courses from other authoring tools?

Yes. Import the SCORM package they publish, or a slide-based project file (.story, .cpt or .cptx) itself. You pick the slides you want and can turn quizzes into scored assessments.

Will the converted course work in a SCORM-only LMS?

Not on its own: the converted course is an xAPI or cmi5 package. If your LMS only supports SCORM, a SCORM-to-xAPI bridging service can wrap the course so your LMS can launch it, while the statements still go to your Learning Record Store.

Is the original SCORM package changed?

No. Importing reads the package and creates a new course from it. The original file isn't changed.

Do I need permission to import a course?

Yes. Only import content you own or have the owner's permission to copy, modify and republish. You confirm this before every import, and you're responsible for how imported content is used.
