A cmi5 authoring tool with AI course generation

xAPI Course Builder is a web-based authoring tool that exports courses as cmi5 packages for cmi5-capable LMSs. You build or generate a course, publish a version and download a cmi5 package that holds the course structure, its own player and all its media.

Build the course

Start from your own material with the AI course generator, import a SCORM course, or start from a blank page. Then build with 43 block types, including question types, branching scenarios, 360° virtual tours and interactive video, review the course with reviewer links, and publish a version.

What's in a cmi5 package

  • A cmi5.xml file that describes the course for your LMS, including when it counts as done
  • The course and its own learner player, which works on desktop, tablet and phone
  • All its images, video and audio, so nothing depends on xAPI Course Builder after export
  • The course's xAPI profile and a list of its activities, so your LRS data can be read without guesswork

A course with a scored assessment counts as done when the learner completes it and passes; any other course, when they complete it. In cmi5 terms, its move-on criteria are CompletedAndPassed or Completed.

How your LMS launches it

  1. Upload

Upload the cmi5 package to your LMS, which reads the course structure.

  2. Launch

When a learner starts the course, the LMS opens it with the LRS address and a one-time token.

  3. Authenticate

The course swaps the token for short-lived access, so LRS credentials never appear in the course link.

  4. Track

The course sends xAPI statements for the session, each answer, completion and pass or fail.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cmi5 package?

A cmi5 package is a ZIP file containing a course and a cmi5.xml file that describes it. A cmi5-capable LMS imports the package, launches the course and gives it access to a Learning Record Store.

Which LMSs support cmi5?

Support varies by LMS and version, and some offer it as a setting or add-on. Ask your LMS provider whether your platform imports cmi5 packages.

Do I need a separate Learning Record Store for cmi5?

Not always. A cmi5 LMS launches the course with the address of a Learning Record Store that is built into the LMS or connected to it. A stand-alone LRS lets you keep your learning data if you change LMS.

Can I export the same course as cmi5 and xAPI?

Yes. Any published version can be exported as a cmi5 package for an LMS, or as an xAPI package for launch links and portals.

Is cmi5 export included in the Free plan?

Yes. Every plan, including Free, exports xAPI and cmi5 packages.
