Import QTI questions into your question bank

xAPI Course Builder imports QTI 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 and 3.0 packages (.zip) and files (.xml) into its question bank. You see every question before it's added, then reuse the questions in any course and export it as xAPI or cmi5.

How QTI import works

  1. Export

Export your quiz or question pool as QTI from your LMS or item bank.

  2. Upload

In the question bank, choose the QTI package (.zip) or file (.xml).

  3. Review

See every question before it's added, and the reason any couldn't be read.

  4. File and tag

Keep the file's categories or file them all under one, and tag them in one go.

What you can do with imported questions

  • Organise them by category and tag. On Team plans, the whole team shares one bank.
  • Copy them into any course's assessment, or have an assessment draw a random set from a category or tag on every attempt.
  • Shuffle questions and answer options, and set pass marks, attempt limits and weighting.
  • Export the course as cmi5 or xAPI. Launched in your LMS, it sends a statement for every answer, including the option chosen, and for every attempt.

QTI import is part of the question bank, which comes with the Pro and Team plans. See pricing. Moving whole courses as well? Import your SCORM packages.

Frequently asked questions

Which QTI versions are supported?

QTI 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 and 3.0, as a package (.zip) or a single file (.xml).

Where do I get a QTI file?

Many LMSs and item banks can export quizzes or question pools as QTI, usually from the quiz or question bank export options. Check your platform's help for "QTI export".

What happens to images in questions?

The question bank holds text only, so images and media are left out with a warning. A question whose question or answers are images is skipped, and you see the reason before you import.

Will importing the same file twice create duplicates?

No. Questions already in your bank are spotted, so importing again doesn't double up.

Which plans include QTI import?

QTI import is part of the question bank, which comes with the Pro and Team plans. On Team, imported questions go into the bank the whole team shares.
